FRIENDS OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS AND BETTER EDUCATION (FRISBE)

About FRISBE

Friends of Independent Schools and Better Education (FRISBE) was established nearly forty years ago by alumni of Canadian independent schools. As U.S. residents, these alumni saw an opportunity to establish FRISBE for the benefit of Canadian independent schools in order to facilitate fundraising for such schools in the U.S.

FRISBE is a Washington State non-profit corporation with IRC Section 501(c)(3) status that promotes and encourages educational institutions that emphasize scholarship, sportsmanship, moral character, individual responsibility and initiative. It supports the activities of such institutions principally through grantmaking activities which are funded by charitable contributions to FRISBE from the general public.

Individual contributors usually request that FRISBE make grants to specific educational institutions. All contributed funds are under the direction and control of its Board of Directors, and it is FRISBE’s policy not to accept any contribution that requires a grant to a specific institution. However, where FRISBE’s Board of Directors determines that a grant to a named institution will further FRISBE’s charitable purpose, the donor’s request will be honored. Organizations that receive FRISBE grants must qualify as Canadian registered charities under Canadian law.

How It Works

Upon receiving each donation, FRISBE mails the donor a receipt, which can be used to substantiate a tax deduction for a charitable contribution on the donor’s IRS tax return. If the donor specifies an educational institution to which it would like the FRISBE Board of Directors to consider making a grant, FRISBE also notifies that institution.

The FRISBE Board of Directors meets twice each year to consider grants. At its March meeting, it considers grants based on the contributions received between July 1 and December 31 of the prior year. At its September meeting, it considers grants based on the contributions it received between January 1 and June 30 of the current year. Educational institutions that are approved for FRISBE grants are mailed checks in US dollars following each board meeting.

Because FRISBE is entirely operated by its Board of Director volunteers, it does not take any fees for its services, other than fees associated with inbound donation transactional costs (credit card fees, etc).
